Hazard Adjustment, Locus of Control, and Sensation Seeking

Some Null Findings

Myra Schiff

Department of Urban and Regional Planning, University of Toronto

Interviews were carried out with 328 residents of London, Ontario, to test the hypothesis that LOC and sensation seekinig are related to the tendency to adopt adjustments to natural and nonnatural hazards. Although there was no support for the hypothesis, secondary analysis revealed certain consistent patterns for the adoption of adjustments to both natural and nonnatural hazards, including a significant positive relationship between past experience and the tendency to adopt adjustments. Possible explanations for the findings are offered, and some directions for future research are suggested.
